Standard Acupuncture Visit

During your first visit, there will be an in-depth interview and exam, which will consist of asking numerous questions to help build a complete picture of who you are and your health history. Typically, you will be asked questions about your sleeping patterns, digestive and urinary function, emotional quality and basic level of stress.

After an unhurried discussion of your health goals and concerns, you lie down on a massage table, usually fully clothed. You may first feel a slight prick with the insertion of the sterile, disposable needle, though most people feel nothing at all. The treatment may also involve the use of electrical stimulation of the needles, moxibustion (the burning of a medicinal herb indirectly on the skin), cupping (glass cups placed on the skin with the pressure on the cup reduced creating a suction), essential oils, or an herbal prescription specific to the condition and person being treated.

Typically, you rest with the needles in place for  30 minutes while soft music plays; many patients fall asleep during this time. The powerful effects of acupuncture are best realized when you are relaxed, so your comfort is always of highest importance.

Once the session is complete, we discuss next steps and together we figure out the best course of treatment moving forward.
