What is Acupuncture and how does it work?
That is the number one question I'm asked! Acupuncture is an ancient form of Eastern Medicine over 3,000 years old that promotes health and balance within the body. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, there are several energetic pathways that carry qi (vital energy), fluids and blood to all areas of the body. When a pathway becomes blocked because of trauma (physical or emotional), lifestyle habits (poor diet) or stress, the qi and blood does not reach all areas of the body. This blockage creates pain or illness. This can also occur if one does not have enough vital energy nourishing a particular area. The insertion of needles in specific acupuncture points along the pathways correct the imbalances and relieves the symptoms. From a Western perspective, acupuncture triggers the production of the body’s own natural painkillers (endorphins), reduces inflammation, and increases circulation to ease pain and stiffness. More and more research is being conducted demonstrating how acupuncture may work as well as proving the benefits of acupuncture on a whole host of disorders.
